If you have a problem sleeping, there might be a variety of possible causes, among them insomnia, shift work, sleep apnea or depression. Whatever the cause, people suffering with a sleep disorder never get a restful sleep.
The following questions are designed to alert you and your sleep mate to the possible presence of a sleep disorder. If you answer yes to two or more, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder.
- Does snoring sometimes require you and your partner to sleep separately?
- Have you awakened suddenly gasping for breath?
- Do you fall asleep at inappropriate times?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Are you gaining weight?
- Are you tired even though you sleep through the night?
- Do you notice a decrease in your sex drive?
- Have you or your family noticed changes in your personality?
- Do you snore no matter what position you sleep in?
- Does your sleepmate tell you that you stop breathing when you snore?
Common symptoms of sleep disorders may include loud snoring, difficulty concentrating, paying attention or remembering, and excessive daytime sleepiness. If left untreated, this disorder may lead to hypertension, heart disease, weight gain, stroke, and an overall decrease in quality of life. Proper diagnosis is essential for the proper treatment of a sleep disorder.

Definitive Diagnosis
Not everyone who has a problem sleeping has a sleep disorder, therefore, a proper diagnosis is essential. If a sleep disorder is suspected, you will be referred to the Sleep Disorder Center for a sleep study.
A sleep study records your sleep patterns, which include activities of your heart, lungs, brain, muscle movement, air flow, and oxygen levels in your blood. This test can be performed in our Sleep Center at Brookhaven. The result of your study will be interpreted by our expert sleep specialists. Your doctor will discuss the findings and recommend treatment options that address your medical condition.
